FRANKLIN PARK, IL - Do low-consumption toilets work or don't they? To read, hear and see the recent debate centered in a congressional committee, most people would conclude they don't. Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R., Mich.) and others have produced what they say are notes written on toilet paper by their constituents. The congressmen say these homeowners are flushed with anger over the effects of the Energy Policy Act of 1992, which requires low-consumption toilets in new construction and to be installed when existing conventional toilets are replaced.
Beyond the rhetoric, the rolled-toilet-paper visuals and the clever headlines, there seems to be a lack of factual information. Anecdotal tales of toilet woes and anguished pleas to "get the government out of my bathroom!" make great copy, but what do actual users REALLY think about their low-consumption toilets? And was there a distinction made between the two types of low-consumption toilets on the market - gravity or pressure-assisted?
To be sure, owners and shoppers in the market for toilets face a formidable task: finding a unit that delivers performance and conserves water. The Energy Policy Act limits fixture manufacturers to using 1.6 gallons per flush, which challenges consumers to find a toilet with the performance they've come to expect. Can a low-consumption toilet conserve water AND work right?
The answer is a resounding yes. According to an independent survey, owners of FLUSHMATE-equipped pressure-assist toilets give the product extremely high marks when it comes to solving the low consumption performance problems.
92% of customers surveyed were satisfied with pressure assist, according to the survey, which was conducted through the mail by Palatine-based Accountability Information Management, Inc., a market research firm. A one-page questionnaire, which contained a cover letter and the survey, was sent to a random total of 5,000 FLUSHMATE customers who supplied warranty cards on the product. FLUSHMATE, the world's leading manufacturer of pressure-assist technology, sponsored the survey. As an incentive, customers were offered a full year extension on their warranty date, which was noted on the survey. The response rate was an extraordinary 68%.
In addition to the 92% satisfaction rating, highlights from the pressure-assist survey included:
The survey collected over 2,000 verbatim comments to questions, and included statements such as:
Other information collected via the survey showed that that many people learned about pressure-assist technology from some other location -- a restaurant, a doctor's office, public restroom, retail store, etc. According to the company, the E-mail received indicates that people often stay at a hotel, use the toilet and then look inside the lid to find out about the performance. Hotels was actually the market that endorsed pressure-assist technology in the beginning because of numerous guest complaints about poor performance from the other technology.
FLUSHMATE-equipped toilets deliver the 1.6 GPF at a greater rate than that of gravity-type units. This eliminates all double-flushing, which is common with 1.6 GPF traditional toilets, and improves the drainline carry (how far waste is carried down the line). In addition, this flushing effectively scrubs the bowl, leaving it cleaner. The FLUSHMATE operating system, by eliminating double flushing and water leakage between flushes, achieves a higher level of water savings (up to 20% more over other low-consumption tank-type water closets).
FLUSHMATE Operating Systems are manufactured by FLUSHMATE, producer of pressurized flushing devices. FLUSHMATE is a division of Sloan Valve Company headquartered in Franklin Park, IL. Sloan has been in operation since 1906, and produces plumbing products for commercial, industrial, and institutional markets worldwide.
